Eyes only
Eyes Only is an interactive CDRom with accompanying archive website. Eyes Only was awarded a BAFTA in the Interface Design category in 2001, the awarding Bafta committee stated that ...this is 'minimalist multimedia'... its beauty, simplicity and originality is contrary to contemporary ideas of how interactivity should work.... 'Eyes Only' explores the complex interplay between collective consciousness and personal perception that informs the processes of interpretation, for example in phenomena such as UFO sightings. A distinctive element of this project is the observation framework that creates an ongoing community of wired users. The user is able to navigate across a number of day and night locations scattered around the world where a number of unexpected 'events' may be triggered. This phenomena appears as judders, sudden flashes, strange disturbances, all of which may be perceived as potential UFO sightings. Users may report phenomena by taking a snapshot and emailing the snapshot to an archive website for other users to see. This project was the artists original concept and produced in partnership with new media company Lessrain Ltd. The artist's direct creative involvement included the video and photography for several of the global night and daytime locations with the programming and action scripting being undertaken by a team of six programmers and designers at Lessrain Ltd. Supported by AHRC Award (£5,000). The project was extensively reviewed in the following journals and magazines: Katalog, Journal of Photography and Video, review of Eyes Only, March/April. Vol 14 No 1, 2002. Dpict, review of Eyes Only, April/May, 2001. Graphics International, showcase, eyes only, issues 83, 2001.
