This article investigates the Romanesque portals of the Cathedral of Bologna. The analysis of the Cathedral of Bologna, rebuilt in the second half of the twelfth century, reveals the tensions at play between different ecclesiastical institutions in relation to the possession of the remains of the most important saints of the city. The investigation of the Cathedral portal reveals the institutional aims of the episcopal seat, and the specific role of the bishop vis-à-vis the city and the Church.
