This chapter focuses on the contribution of micro-finance towards supporting the development of micro and small enterprises in rural areas in developing countries. The main objective of this chapter is to provide the broad meaning and scope of the concept of microfinance. It reviews some of the relevant literature of existing published and grey empirical literature on the barriers that micro and small entrepreneurs encounter in their attempt to access credit facilities and financial services. It also discusses the reasons behind the failure of microfinance policy to support micro and small enterprises, especially in the rural areas in developing countries.
