AbstractHigher Education institutions increasingly areemploying information systems to supportlearning and assessment. In particular, a greatdeal of interest has been expressed in intranethostedlearning environments that support theeducational experience. At the same time, university curricula and student assessmentare increasingly defined and driven bylearning outcomes. Most intranet-basedlearning environments use modules of study asthe fundamental unit of construction. Thisresults in a failure to record performance bylearning outcome. There is therefore amismatch between current educationalthinking and the information systems thatsupport the processes. This paper presents the findings of a pilotproject that focuses on the building of a virtuallearning environment that utilises learningoutcomes in framing the delivery model andassessing student performance. Early feedbackfrom the pilot project suggests that benefits forstudents and staff, and improvements ininstitutional quality, might be obtained fromthis novel delivery and assessmentmethodology. This paper further develops ideas that werepresented at SITE2003 and includes the resultsof student feedback and evaluation.
