Mixed metaphors

<p>This extensive solo exhibition occupied 3 rooms of the museum and surveyed my work over a 30 year period committed to the study of the human figure through the drawing process. The exhibition was designed to provide an overview of the development of ‘an artists’ vision,’ through tracking the use of visual metaphors. The exhibition revealed how selected and the juxtaposition of images formed ideas that constructed meaning through new visual and intellectual relationships. There is room for interpretation and ambiguity – the exhibition sought to demonstrate the explicit correlation between conceptual framework and a visual resolution.Because of the survey nature of the exhibition, one aspect was the study, perception and resolution of the self-portrait. 10 new self-portrait drawings and prints were included in the exhibition. The confrontation with reflection, visual and mental, simultaneously performer and beholder, was the focus of the research on the study of ‘Rembrandt’s Self- Portraits – a study in 17th Century identity.”Another important component of the exhibition was the engagement with the creative process. A reconstruction of the studio environment with reference material was set up to illustrate the dynamic resource material drawn upon and referenced throughout the images in the project.At each venue a drawing seminar provided a forum for discussion and assisted with the educational rationale behind the exhibition.</p>
