[Exhibition] Andrew Bracey: Animalation

<p dir="ltr">Animalation was a solo exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery from 31 October 2009 to 28 February 2010 and was curated by Clare Gannaway of Manchester Art Gallery. It featured 6 new animations that built upon research into the idea of the free-enclosure within zoo design, arising from previous artworks disseminated in a touring solo exhibition, Frienalage at firstsite, Colchester, Wolverhampton Art Gallery and Transition Gallery, London. The animations were installed (and many created in mind of the) specific site of the gallery space. Innovative display methods for animation were used, such as projecting onto post-it notes and fixing screens into window spaces. The exhibition was previewed in The Guardian newspaper, Saturday 31 October 2009 by Robert Clark.Bracey describes his work as “on the edge of painting, as it slips into installation, animation, sculpture and video. Humboldt (2006-7), for example, is a projection made from hundreds of individual Indian ink drawings, showing Humboldt penguins swimming back and forth under the shifting, hypnotic line of the water's surface. Also inspired by animals' natural behaviour, Work and Play (2007) initially appears to be a blank post-it note left carelessly on the gallery wall. We have to wait patiently, watching closely to catch the occasional glimpse of a spinner dolphin as it leaps into view. Studio Monkey (2007) shows a wall in an artist's studio, as if captured by CCTV. A clutter of images and studio ephemera fills the screen and on first glance nothing much seems to be happening. It's only as you watch more carefully that one of the photos comes to life. Other new animation works by Bracey will also be shown for the first time in this exhibition.</p>
