All of these works develop research into the material nature of ‘thin’ substrates, such as foil, sheet plastic and paper, using them to construct sculpture that evokes a sense how ourexperience of time oscillates through a range, from the internal and subjective to exterior, cosmic or geological. Research is primarily studio based, physically manipulating blank twodimensional materials over extended periods. This is a strategy for ‘stepping back’ from theassumption that the substrate awaits the application of meaning via marks etc – and toattempt to draw out the temporal quality of the medium itself, to reassert the autonomy of theobject and position it in time. Research also involves ongoing reflective writing examining thesubjective experience of the works creation in the studio combined with reflection on thewritings of Henri Bergson, specifically ‘Creative Evolution – An Introduction to Metaphysics’,specifically his concept of ‘duree’, an infinitely unfurling multiplicity of experiences of the worldin which in which ‘novelty is constantly springing forth and evolution is creative.
